Unit 9: The Second Coming of Jesus Christ
Chapter 45: The Millennium
Comments and Resources "Some members of the Church have an erroneous idea that when the millennium comes all the people are going to be swept off the earth except righteous members of the Church.That is not so. There will be millions of people, Catholics, Protestants, agnostics, Mohammedans, people of all classes, and of all beliefs, still permitted to remain upon the face of the earth, but they will be those who have lived clean lives, those who have been free from wickedness and corruption. All who belong, by virtue of their good lives, to the terrestrial order, as well as those who have kept the celestial law, will remain upon the face of the earth during the millennium." (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 1:86-87.) "We ought to have the building up of Zion as our greatest object" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 160). "As important as it is to have this vision in mind, defining and describing Zion will not bring it about. That can only be done through consistent and concerted daily effort by every single member of the Church.No Matter what the cost in toil or sacrifice, we must do it... "May I suggest three fundamental things we must do if we are to bring about Zion, three things for which we who labor for Zion must commit ourselves "First, we must eliminate the individual tendency to selfishness that snares the soul, shrinks the heart and darkens the mind... "Second, we must cooperate completely and work in harmony one with the other. There must be unanimity in our decisions and unity in our actions... "Third, we must lay on the altar and sacrifice whatever is required by the Lord..." (Spencer W. Kimball, "Becoming the Pure in Heart." Ensign, May 1978, p. 79). During the study of this topic, we will learn more of the conditions that will exist during the Millennium. Resources:

Jesus the Christ, chapter 42 Scriptures:
2 Nephi 8:11"Therefore, the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with 8/11c">singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy and holiness shall be upon their heads; and they shall obtain gladness and joy; sorrow and mourning shall flee away." Ether 13:2-11
  "2 For behold, they rejected all the words of Ether; for he truly told them of all things, from the beginning of man; and that after the waters had receded from off the face of this land it became a choice land above all other lands, a chosen land of the Lord; wherefore the Lord would have that all men should serve him who dwell upon the face thereof;
  3 And that it was the place of the New Jerusalem, which should come down out of heaven, and the holy sanctuary of the Lord.
  4 Behold, Ether saw the days of Christ, and he spake concerning a New Jerusalem upon this land.
  5 And he spake also concerning the house of Israel, and the Jerusalem from whence Lehi should come after it should be destroyed it should be built up again, a holy city unto the Lord; wherefore, it could not be a new Jerusalem for it had been in a time of old; but it should be built up again, and become a holy city of the Lord; and it should be built unto the house of Israel.
  6 And that a New Jerusalem should be built up upon this land, unto the remnant of the seed of Joseph, for which things there has been a type.
  7 For as Joseph brought his father down into the land of Egypt, even so he died there; wherefore, the Lord brought a remnant of the seed of Joseph out of the land of Jerusalem, that he might be merciful unto the seed of Joseph that they should perish not, even as he was merciful unto the father of Joseph that he should perish not.
  8 Wherefore, the remnant of the house of Joseph shall be built upon this land; and it shall be a land of their inheritance; and they shall build up a holy city unto the Lord, like unto the Jerusalem of old; and they shall no more be confounded, until the end come when the earth shall pass away.
  9 And there shall be a new heaven and a new earth; and they shall be like unto the old save the old have passed away, and all things have become new.
  10 And then cometh the New Jerusalem; and blessed are they who dwell therein, for it is they whose garments are white through the blood of the Lamb; and they are they who are numbered among the remnant of the seed of Joseph, who were of the house of Israel.
  11 And then also cometh the Jerusalem of old; and the inhabitants thereof, blessed are they, for they have been washed in the blood of the Lamb; and they are they who were scattered and gathered in from the four quarters of the earth, and from the north countries, and are partakers of the fulfilling of the covenant which God made with their father, Abraham." D&C 45:63-75; 57:1-5; 64:33-43; 97 D&C 45:63-75
  "63 Ye hear of wars in foreign lands; but, behold, I say unto you, they are nigh, even at your doors, and not many years hence ye shall hear of wars in your own lands.
  64 Wherefore I, the Lord, have said, gather ye out from the eastern lands, assemble ye yourselves together ye elders of my church; go ye forth into the western countries, call upon the inhabitants to repent, and inasmuch as they do repent, build up churches unto me.
  65 And with one heart and with one mind, gather up your riches that ye may purchase an inheritance which shall hereafter be appointed unto you.
  66 And it shall be called the New Jerusalem, a land of peace, a city of refuge, a place of safety for the saints of the Most High God;
  67 And the glory of the Lord shall be there, and the terror of the Lord also shall be there, insomuch that the wicked will not come unto it, and it shall be called Zion.
  68 And it shall come to pass among the wicked, that every man that will not take his sword against his neighbor must needs flee unto Zion for safety.
  69 And there shall be gathered unto it out of every nation under heaven; and it shall be the only people that shall not be at war one with another.
  70 And it shall be said among the wicked: Let us not go up to battle against Zion, for the inhabitants of Zion are terrible; wherefore we cannot stand.
  71 And it shall come to pass that the righteous shall be gathered out from among all nations, and shall come to Zion, singing with songs of everlasting joy.
  72 And now I say unto you, keep these things from going abroad unto the world until it is expedient in me, that ye may accomplish this work in the eyes of the people, and in the eyes of your enemies, that they may not know your works until ye have accomplished the thing which I have commanded you;
  73 That when they shall know it, that they may consider these things.
  74 For when the Lord shall appear he shall be terrible unto them, that fear may seize upon them, and they shall stand afar off and tremble.
  75 And all nations shall be afraid because of the terror of the Lord, and the power of his might.Even so.Amen." D&C 57:1-5
  "1 Hearken, O ye elders of my church, saith the Lord your God, who have assembled yourselves together, according to my commandments, in this land, which is the land of Missouri, which is theland which I have appointed and consecrated for the gathering of the saints.
  2 Wherefore, this is the land of promise, and the place for the city of Zion.
  3 And thus saith the Lord your God, if you will receive wisdom here is wisdom.Behold, the place which is now called Independence is the center place; and a spot for the temple is lying westward, upon a lot which is not far from the courthouse.
  4 Wherefore, it is wisdom that the land should be purchased by the saints, and also every tract lying westward, even unto the line running directly between Jew and Gentile;
  5 And also every tract bordering by the prairies, inasmuch as my disciples are enabled to buy lands.Behold, this is wisdom, that they may obtain it for an everlasting inheritance.

D&C 64:33-43
  33 Wherefore, be not weary in well -doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work.And out of small things proceedeth that which is great.
  34 Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind; and the willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land of Zion in these last days.
  35 And the rebellious shall be cut off out of the land of Zion, and shall be sent away, and shall not inherit the land.
  36 For, verily I say that the rebellious are not of the blood of 64/36a">Ephraim, wherefore they shall be plucked out.
  37 Behold, I, the Lord, have made my church in these last days like unto a judge sitting on a hill, or in a high place, to judge the nations.
  38 For it shall come to pass that the inhabitants of Zion shall judge all things pertaining to Zion.
  39 And liars and hypocrites shall be proved by them, and they who are not apostles and prophets shall be known.
  40 And even the 64/40a">bishop, who is a 64/40b">judge, and his counselors, if they are not faithful in their stewardships shall be condemned, and others shall be planted in their stead.
  41 For, behold, I say unto you that Zion shall flourish, and the glory of the Lord shall be upon her;
  42 And she shall be an ensign unto the people, and there shall come unto her out of every nation under heaven.
  43 And the day shall come when the nations of the earth shall tremble because of her, and shall fear because of her terrible ones.The Lord hath spoken it.Amen." D&C 97
"Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Kirtland, Ohio, August 2, 1833. HC 1: 400 402. This revelation deals particularly with the affairs of the saints in Zion, Jackson County, Missouri, in response to the Prophet s inquiry of the Lord for information.Members of the Church in Missouri were at this time subjected to severe persecution, and on July 23, 1833, had been forced to sign an agreement to leave Jackson County.

  "18 ¶ Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower... Moses 7:17-23
  17 The fear of the Lord was upon all nations, so great was the glory of the Lord, which was upon his people. And the Lord blessed the land, and they were blessed upon the mountains, and upon the high places, and did flourish.
  18 And the Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them.
  19 And Enoch continued his preaching in righteousness unto the people of God.And it came to pass in his days, that he built a city that was called the City of Holiness, even Zion.
  20 And it came to pass that Enoch talked with the Lord; and he said unto the Lord: Surely Zion shall dwell in safety forever.But the Lord said unto Enoch: Zion have I blessed, but the residue of the people have I cursed.
  21 And it came to pass that the Lord'showed unto Enoch all the inhabitants of the earth; and he beheld, and lo, Zion, in process of time, was taken up into heaven.And the Lord said unto Enoch: Behold mine abode forever.
  22 And Enoch also beheld the residue of the people which were the sons of Adam; and they were a mixture of all the seed of Adam save it was the seed of Cain, for the seed of Cain were black, and had not place among them.
  23 And after that Zion was taken up into heaven, Enoch beheld, and lo, all the nations of the earth were before him; Articles of Faith 1:10"We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory." Moroni 10:4-5
  "4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
  5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things."
