Unit 7: Perfecting Our Lives
Chapter 24: The Sabbath Day
Comments and Resources "Elder Ezra Taft Benson stated "The purpose of the Sabbath is for Spiritual uplift, for a renewal of our Covenants, for worship, for prayer. It is for the purpose of feeding the spirit, that we may keep ourselves unspotted from the world by obeying God's Command." (God, Family, Country; Our Three Great Loyalties, pp. 103-04). During the study of this topic, you will learn what the Sabbath day is, why the Lord gave it, what we must do to keep it holy, and the blessings that came from observing it. Resources:

Jesus the Christ, Chapter 15 Scriptures:
Mosiah 13:16-19
  "16 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  17 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;
  18 But the seventh day, the sabbath of the Lord thy God, thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;
  19 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is; wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." Exodus 20:8-11
  "8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
  10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
  11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." Isaiah 58:13-14
  "13 ¶ If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord , honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
  14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord ; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it." Matthew 12:1-8
  "1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.
  2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.
  3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;
  4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
  5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
  6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
  7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
  8 For the Son of man is Lord even of thesabbath day." Acts 20:7"And upon the first 2day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight." D&C 59:9-19
  "9 And that thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted from the world, thou shalt go to the house of prayer and offer up thy sacraments upon my holy day;
  10 For verily this is a day appointed unto you to rest from your labors, and to pay thy devotions unto the Most High;
  11 Nevertheless thy vows shall be offered up in righteousness on all days and at all times;
  12 But remember that on this, the Lord's day, thou shalt offer thine oblations and thy sacraments unto the Most High, confessing thy sins unto thy brethren, and before the Lord.
  13 And on this day thou shalt do none other thing, only let thy food be prepared with singleness of heart that thy fasting may be perfect, or, in other words, that thy joy may be full.
  14 Verily, this is fasting and prayer, or in other words, rejoicing and prayer.
  15 And inasmuch as ye do these things with thanksgiving, with cheerful hearts and countenances, not with much laughter, for this is sin, but with a glad heart and a cheerful countenance
  16 Verily I say, that inasmuch as ye do this, the fulness of the earth is yours, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and that which climbeth upon the trees and walketh upon the earth;
  17 Yea, and the herb, and the good things which come of the earth, whether for food or for raiment, or for houses, or for barns, or for orchards, or for gardens, or for vineyards;
  18 Yea, all things which come of the earth, in the season thereof, are made for the benefit and the use of man, both to please the eye and to gladden the heart;
  19 Yea, for food and for raiment, for taste and for smell, to strengthen the body and to enliven the soul."

Moroni 10:4-5
  "4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
  5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things."
