5092. Rev. Francis DOUGHTY *

Francis Doughty, expelled from Chasset for preaching that Abraham's children should have been baptized.  He founded the town of   "Maspeth", 1642.  (  Founders of Early American Families Emigrants from Europe 1607-1657  Pages 198-199.
Immigtated 1638 to Dochester, Massachusetts.
In 1637, Franciscus Doughty, an English clergerman of Taunton, Massachusetts, removed to Long Island in 1641, having come to New England, at the time of the persscution in England.  He betook himself under the protection of the Netherlands, in order that he may, according to Dutch Reformation, enjoy freedom of conscience, which he unexpectelly missed in England.  In 1642, the director granted and conveyed to him absolute patent with Manoral Priveleges.  He added some families to his settlement, at Maspeth, Long Island, in the course of a year, but the war breaking out they were all driven off their lands, some were killed and almost all they had was lost.  They fled as all refugees do, to Manhatton, and Master Doughty was minster there.  He was without means and his land was sized by the director.  Doughty appealed, but the director said there ws no appeal, his imprisonment 24 hours, and to pay 24 guilders.  The  deed was for 6,666 acres of land, at Maspeth, from God.  In 1648 Doughty departed from the English Virginia, he had previiously conferred on his daughter Mary, on her marriage,  in 1645, with Adrian Von Der Dovank, his farm on Flushing Bay, now owned by Abraham and John Rapalge.

After gettin into trouble with Bishop Laud in England, Francis came to Massachusetts Colony in 1638, where he became Pastor of Taunton, Massachusetts.  Falling out of favor with Puritan Leaders, he moved for a short time to Rhode Island and in 1642 to the New Netherland Colony of Mespeth in modern Brooklyn.  driven out by Indians in 1643 he went to Manhatton and was taken back as Pastor to Mespeth and Flushing.  By 1656 he had migrater to Accomack County, Virginia where he remarried, revitalized the Church and presided over some Witchcraft Trials.  By 1665 he had move to Settingbourn and Farnham Parishes in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia.  Eventually he left everything to his wife and departed Virginia to parts unknown.
