2550. George MARIS *

HISTORY OF THE NAME OF MARIS
Here is a family name which may be accounted for ain several ways.  The simplest explanation lies in its development from a given name which was fairly popular among the Norman French, that of Mariess.  But while this undoubtedly accounts for the name in a great many instances it does not suffice for all.  It is also traceable to the name of a locality in normandy known as "la Marais"
In the first instance the early form of the name is found as Fitsmariess of Fitzmaris (Which undoubtadly also has developed in some instances into Fitzmaris the "Fitz" being the Norman development of the Latin "filius" meaning son.
In the latter the early form is found as "de le Marais".  But it is also a matter of record that, in some instances the family name was brought into England after it had already became a family name in France in the form of "Maris".
George Maris, a Proviacial Counsiller and Colonial Jurtice of Pennsylvania emigrated from the parish of Inkborrow in the county of Worcester, England in 1683 with his wife Alice and several children.   His life in England had been rendered oppressive, because he could not conform to the customs of the established church, for having a religious meeting at his house he was fined 20 pounds.  Afterwards "he was taken by an assize process and sent to prison on the 23rd of the month called July, 1670, and continued there about eight months, but never knew for what cause he was so long imprisoned".
On his first arrival he appears to have tarried for a short time with the Friends that had arrived the year before and settled at Darby  but he soon locatd a 400 acre tract of land in Springfield township whereon he settledand built a substantial building of stone calling  it "THE ROME HOUSE."  He was among the most emiment of the public Friends that came over with the first settlers .  Accordingly on 28 November, he purchased through Robert Toomer of Worcester, from William Penn, 1000 Acres of land in Pennsylvania.  With his certificate signed 6 Mar 1683 from the Friends of Inkborrows to the Friends in Pennsylvania.
His certificate which is recorded at Darby says, "He hath advanced the Gospel of Christ".  He held many public trusts on several occasions was chosen a member of the Provincial Assembly.  He was one of those who signed the testimony against the calebrated George Keith.  His death occured in 1703 at the age of 73 years, (born in the year 1630) His wife having died nearly four years earlier in 1699.
