rachel was a weaver by trade.
Rachel was a weaver by trade.  Her mother died when she was about eight years old.  She was bonded out to learn a trade, people she lived with taught her to weave.  Her granddaughter, Amelia said she would rather weave than do anything else.  She was well known for her woven carpets.  People would come all the way from Denver to buy her carpets.  Edna had three fingers cut off of her right hand.  Amelia said she heard that Edna's brother James cut them off when they were chopping wood.  She was holding some wood for her brother James to cut when he missed the wood and cut of her fingers.

DEATH CLAIMS ANOTHER
Mrs. J. R. Woodward Died This Morning After Lingering Illness
Came to Douglas County in 1857 and Was a Continual Resident of This County

Death this morning claimed Mrs. J. R. Woodward, wife of J. R. Woodward of this city.  Mrs Woodward had been ill for sometime and recently was taken to the Simmons Hospital where she died this morning.  Death was caused by cancer of the stomach.
Mrs Woodward was born in Holt County, MO., May 26, 1855, she came with her parents Mr. and Mrs Martin Baum to Kansas, settling in Douglas County and until the time of her death was a continual resident of this count.  On March 19, 1876 she was married to J. R. Woodward of this county.  She was the mother of eight children, seven of which are living and were here at the time of her death.  They are M. W. Woodward of Spokane, Washington; Lloyd E. Woodward of Pueblo, Colorado; Thomas R. Woodward, Mrs. Henry Simmons, Mrs Anna Bell Woodward.  Mrs George Jenson and George Woodward all of Lawrence.
The funeral will be held on Thursday morning, internment will be in the Clinton Cemetery.  Rev. J. J. Snyder will have charge of the service which will be held at the home, 1208 Deleware street.
Fifty-six years a resident of Douglas County, a lifetime in itself.  Mrs. Woodward was a force for good all these years.  Many of them were hard years, there were always more lean than fat ones, as there was in the lives of our pioneers.  But the hard life made this woman strong just as it brought out the greatest strength of the pioneer characters generally.  Mrs. Woodward came to Douglas county with her parents as a child two years old.  All her (unreadable) life was spent in this county.  She was a good girl, a good woman, a fine wife and a mother of unsurpassed worth in her home life and influence that radiated in every direction.
Mrs. Woodward was young when she died, but she had lived a long time if measured by the times a pioneer passed through  She was a stalwart and brave and fought her battles along with her good husband as they came, never hesitating, never turning back.  She was a sister of the Lord and she never hesitated to do her duty.  It is sad to have such lives end, but good to know that they did their work here and the rest is not unwelcome.

Marriage recorded Douglas County, Kansas Marriage Records - 1876.  Married by L. M. Sawyer, J.P.
